We have a butterfly!

The first of the painted lady butterflies came out of it's chrysalis Friday afternoon!  Tess, Ms. Kornegay, Ms. Head and Ms. Pounders all "ooh'd" and "ahhed" over how pretty it was.

Field Day

On May 20th we will have our annual "Field Day" to enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate good classroom behavior.  Field Day is a reward for ending the year on a good note.  Coach has many exciting stations planned for Field Day this year.  There will be an obstacle course, beach volleyball, tug-of-war, water bucket relay, sack races, "dizzy izzy" relay and everyone's favorite--the slip 'n slide!  Concessions will be available again this year.  All money raised from concessions will go toward P.E. the purchase of new P.E. equipment.

Video of our chrysalids

Here is some information taken from a website I found this evening.
http://www.lifeofabutterfly.com
A caterpillar (larva) will make a chrysalis (for butterflies) or a cocoon (for moths).  It will spin some thread around its middle section (called the belt) and produce a patch of coiled thread at its tail end (called the pillow).  It's skin will be shed for the last time and a shell will form underneath its shed skin.  This shell hardens into a protective case which is the chrysalis.

Butterfly Hatching

We recently started a project to hatch Painted Lady butterflies.  Our caterpillars (larvae) arrived in the mail last week and they have been resting in our classroom.  We are waiting until the larvae have formed their chrysalids so they can be transferred to the butterfly observatory.  We are very excited to learn more about the life cycle of a butterfly!

A Big "Shout-Out" to Mrs. Lilly and Blue Bell Ice Creameries

In celebration of Mrs. Lilly being chosen to advance to the 2nd level of state teacher of the year, Blue Bell Creameries in Sylacauga donated homemade vanilla ice cream cups to each member of our school family. To make it even sweeter, I got to get a hug from one of my best buddies, Mr. Chris Stephens, who hand-delivered the ice cream cups to Mrs. Lilly and the school. It was so yummy!

Kindergarten Registration

Know anyone who will be 5 this year and ready for Kindergarten?  We're having kindergarten registration at Sycamore Elementary School tomorrow in the school library.  You will need current blue slip, social security card and proof of residence to register.  One word of caution, we are in the middle of school renovation so please excuse our mess!  We are quite happy to be getting new updates to our building but we are not fond of all the mess.  We want you to know that this is temporary! We don't normally pile all of our belongings in the hallway and have jack-hammers drilling non-stop.

Boxtops for Education

Kids don't forget to keep bringing in those Boxtops for Education.  You can still earn a hatpass for every 10 boxtops you bring in.  It's an easy way to help our school earn money for buying extra things.

The Cricket in Times Square

I wanted to recommend a book to all my 2nd graders.  I almost always read this book at the end of school.  Since we have been so long with reading Little House in the Big Woods, I don't know if we'll have time to read The Cricket in Times Square.  If we don't get to it, I would like to suggest that you either buy this book from the bookstore or check it out of the library and read it this summer.  I really think you will enjoy it!

Moving Time!

Have you noticed all the desks moving up and down the hall?  It's because of all the upcoming changes and improvements that will take place at school starting this week.  Mrs. Lilly, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Willams have moved their classes into the gym so the construction of the new air conditioning system can begin.  Soon, the construction will continue upstairs and we will also be getting a new computer lab! Mrs. Willams (speech) and Mrs. Datcher's room will become our new computer lab.  2nd grade will soon move into the library and the new air conditioners will be built in the upstairs rooms.  Whew! Don't worry though, learning will continue and there are still plenty of days left in school to enjoy.  We will just have to be flexible and make some adjustments so we can enjoy our school improvements!

"Outdoor Classroom" Field Trip

Hey kids! The field trip is coming up soon.  If you haven't done so already, make sure you get your permission form turned in.  You will also need to make sure you have the appropriate clothes and shoes ready for our trip.  You will need to wear something that won't hurt to get dirty.  You will also need tennis shoes and socks to keep your feet safe and dry!  Do not wear flip flops or slip on shoes.  If you get sunburned easily, please put on sunscreen before you come to school.  I will take plenty of pictures so you do not need to bring a camera.
